darcyfinal2 Mike Schultz/Pat D'Arcy (middle) on the podium after claiming second place at the 2014 NJSIAA State Wresling finals. ATLANTIC CITY - Holy Spirit High School wrestler Pat D'Arcy concluded a great season on Sunday with a second-place finish at the 2014 NJSIAA State Wrestling Tournament.

"Coming into the season, I was looking for a state title," D'Arcy said. "I moved up a step on the podium so that is something to be proud of." Last season he placed third in the state at 106 pounds.

D'Arcy (40-3) faced Bergen Catholic's Nick Suriano in the finals. Suriano, a sophomore, is ranked number one in the state and two in the country. He defeated D'Arcy 7-0 in the 113-pound bout and claimed his second state title.

D'Arcy was familiar with his opponent coming into Sunday's match. The two met last at the Beast of the East Tournament where Suriano defeated him 11-3.

Suriano was able to stifle much of D'Arcy's attempts to be aggressive. He led 3-0 at the end of two periods after a reversal and escape. He stretched the lead 7-0 midway through the third period and didn't stop wrestling until the end.

"He's very sound when it comes to position," D'Arcy said. "He put a couple moves together (chain wrestled). There's not a lot of holes in his game."

Wrestling began at 126 pounds which meant D'Arcy was the next to last bout of the day. He waited patiently as he watched all three Region 8 wrestlers who went before him claim state titles.

Paulsboro's Ronnie Gentile (138), St. Augustine's Jack Clark (152) and Delsea's Brian Dobzanski (220) all pulled out dramatic wins.

Gentile defeated Cranford junior Gavin Murray 7-6, holding Murray's late rally off. Clark won a 3-1 decision in OT over Hunterdon Central's Gary Dinmore and Dobzanski escaped for a TB-2 (2-1) over Don Bosco Prep's Zack Chakonis.

Suriano's teammate Johnny Sebastian was awarded Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Camden 285-ponder Andrew Stevens brought the crowd at Boardwalk Hall to its feet when he won his bout over Tyler Gildner of Robbinsville. With the win, Stevens became the first wrestler in Camden High School history to win a state championship.
