Wednesday evening’s high school wrestling match between Lower Cape May and Middle Township went down to the wire.
Middle Township won more bouts but the Caper Tigers prevailed, 34-33, thanks to five pins and a major decision.
Eric Pruszinski (106), Zack Valcarce (120), Ty Altieri (145) and Cory Damiana (195) each recorded falls in the first period, while Doug Flitcroft (Hwt.) earned a second-period fall to lead the Caper Tigers (3-6). Jackson Sole (160) also provided a 14-3 major-decision victory.
John Mallett (152) and James Loftus (182) registered falls for Middle Township (4-1). John Mooers (182) won by technical fall and Kenny Dale (126) scored a major decision. Other winners for Middle included Ronray Harris (113), Brandon Curtis (132), Jacob Kershaw (138) and Jason Sierra (220).
The 113-pound bout was the last of the match. Needing a major-decision win to at least create a tie, Middle’s Ronray Harris instead beat Lower’s Zach Hicks, 13-11. Harris remained unbeaten on the season at 8-0 with the win.
