Mike Burke, a 2002 graduate of Middle Township High School, has been named the associate head golf coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, the school announced recently.

Burke had been serving as a member of the academy’s golf professional staff since 2007 and became a volunteer assistant coach in 2008, according to a press release on the Navy athletics web site.

Since his arrival, Navy has won two Patriot League championships (2008, 2012) and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Burke will serve under head coach Pat Owen.

“I am very excited for this opportunity to be working with such a highly-respected and dedicated coach as Pat Owen,” Burke said in the release. “I look forward to bringing years of experience as a golf instructor and passion for the game to an already highly-talented roster. It is our goal to continue to be one of the best programs in the Patriot League and compete on a national level.”

Burke served as captain of Middle’s golf team during his senior season in 2002. He went on to earn a bachelors degree in professional golf management from Clemson University, graduating in 2006. Prior to arriving at the Naval Academy, Burke served internships at Brentwood (Calif.) County Club, Seaview Marriott, the Air Force Academy (Colo.) and Bandon Dune (Ore.) Country Club. He passed his PGA Playing Ability Test on his first attempt.

“I am thrilled to have Mike Burke join our Navy golf team as associate head coach,” Owen said in the release. “Mike has been with us for five years on a volunteer basis and has a wealth of experience and knowledge about our program. His teaching and coaching skills fit well into our system. Given the opportunity to recruit on a national level, I am confident he can help elevate Navy golf to a new level.”
The Midshipmen begin their spring season with a March 4-5 trip to Charleston, S.C. where they will compete in the Charleston Shootout.

Burke is one of several members of his family to make an impact on the golf program at Middle Township High School. His father, Dave (class of 1975), older brother, Doug (class of 2000), and younger brother, Ryan (class of 2012), also served as team captains at Middle.
