Lauryn Fields plays basketball with a certain amount of flair.

It shouldn’t surprise us, then, that the Middle Township High School junior reached 1,000 career points on a rather dynamic shot.

Fields’ 1,000th point came on a 40-foot heave from near halfcourt to beat the halftime buzzer during the Lady Panthers’ 47-27 victory at Hammonton Thursday night.

Fields picked up her dribble right at the halfcourt line, took a half step forward to gain momentum and fired a shot that sailed through the air and into the hoop as time expired in the half.

Fields, who scored 14 points in the game, finished the contest with 1,003 points. She is the 13th player in Middle Township girls basketball history to reach 1,000 career points.

Fields’ shot gave Middle a commanding 30-10 lead at intermission.

Middle improved to 14-8 with the victory. Lauren Legler was the team’s high scorer in the contest, netting 16 points.
