Five from Cape May County advance at regions

Five of the seven wrestlers participating in the Region 8 Tournament Wednesday night at Egg Harbor Township won their bouts to advance to this weekend’s action.

Lower Cape May’s Eric Pruszinski, Zach Hicks and Zack Valcarce and Ocean City’s Cooper Gallagher and Josh Johnson all won their preliminary bouts to keep their seasons alive. They’ll join other Wednesday winners as well as the four district champions in each weight class for the quarterfinal round at EHT on Friday.

Pruszinski scored a 5-1 decision over Trent Tutko of Williamstown at 106 pounds, Hicks posted a 9-5 win over Dustin Zuzulock of West Deptford at 113 and Valcarce was a 9-6 winner over Sal Marandino of Buena at 120. Lower Cape May’s other region qualifier, 145-pounder Ty Altieri, was bumped from the tournament with a 6-4 loss to Kevin Keppler of Washington Township.

Ocean City’s Gallagher won a 6-3 result over Clearview’s Joe Sindoni at 170, with Johnson scoring a 6-4 decision over Cylas Dorety of Woodstown. Ocean City’s Cliff Owens also qualified for regions but lost an 18-9 major decision to Cory Jacobs of Clayton.
