Three LCM wrestlers advance to states

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Three Lower Cape May Regional wrestlers have earned a spot at the state championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City next weekend.

Eric Pruszinski, Zach Hicks and Cory Damiana each placed third in their respective weight classes.

Pruszinski made it through at 106 pounds. He was knocked from the championship side of the bracket with a loss in the quarterfinal round on Friday but won his next three bouts to place third. He posted decisions of 3-2 and 12-6 in the early rounds of wrestlebacks before winning by injury default over Lucas Seigfried of Highland in 5:42 in the consolation final to place third.

Hicks also lost in the quarterfinal round before dominating in wrestlebacks at 113. He scored a pin in 40 seconds and a 7-2 decision before winning by fall in 2:30 over Delsea’s Tom Carney in the consolation final for third place.

Damiana made it into the semifinal round with a win by fall in 2:26 but then lost a tough 10-9 decision to Millville’s Ed Shockley in the semifinal round and was sent to wrestlebacks. He then posted two pins to advance, winning in just 29 seconds in his first wrestleback before decking Isaiah Coppage of Penns Grove in 3:46 in the consolation final for third place.

Three other Lower wrestlers – Zack Valcarce (120), Ty Altieri (145) and Frank Ziegler (182) – lost twice at regions and did not advance to states. Middle Township’s John Mallett (152) and Ocean City’s Cliff Owens (138), Cooper Gallagher (170) and Josh Johnson (220) also competed at regions but did not advance to states

All three of Lower Cape May’s qualified wrestlers will compete Friday night at Boardwalk Hall.
