For the fourth time in six seasons the Ocean City High School girls basketball team reigns as South Jersey Group 3 Champions.

Paul Baruffi’s Raiders (24-4) defeated Timber Creek, 34-26, on Monday night at the Dixie Howell Gymnasium to win the fifth title in OCHS girls history. The win moves Ocean City into the NJSIAA State Semifinal against Freehold Boro, which won the Central Jersey crown by beating Neptune in overtime.

“We’ve had a few disappointments this season,” said Baruffi, “but we don’t dwell on them. Winning this always makes the hard work worthwhile and these kids worked hard.”

Julia Duggan scored 13 points to lead Ocean City and joined Natalie Landi in controlling the boards. But it was four free throws by Katie Johnson in the final minute – her only four points of the game – that finally put away the young Timber Creek team. The Raiders had missed nine straight free throws in the game at one point and finished just 8 for 18.

Nicole Piergross added eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Landi scored five and Taylor Price had four.

Sophomore guard Brittany Martin had 15 for Timber Creek, which finished 13-14.
