WILLIAMSTOWN – It’s quite evident the Freehold Borough High School girls basketball team hadn’t seen a defense quite like Ocean City’s in the state tournament.

After scoring at least 50 points in its four victories leading to a Central Jersey championship, Freehold was limited to only eight points through three quarters of play as the Raiders posted a 35-26 victory in the state Group III semifinal Wednesday night.

The victory places South Jersey champion Ocean City (25-4) into Sunday’s state championship game against Jefferson Township at Pine Belt Arena in Toms River at a time to be determined. Jefferson beat Cranford, 50-40, in the other state semifinal.

Ocean City, which has won sectional titles in four of the last six seasons, will appear in the state title game for the first time since 2008.

Rider-bound senior forward Julia Duggan posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Raiders.

Ocean City held Freehold (23-6) to two points in both the first and third quarters. The Raiders never trailed after running out to a 9-2 lead after one period.
