It appears Matt Szczur will start the new baseball season in the same place he finished the last one.

The Lower Cape May Regional High School graduate has been optioned from the Chicago Cubs Major League spring training camp to the Double A Tennessee Smokies of the Southern League, the club announced on Twitter this afternoon.

Szczur, and outfielder who played the second half of last season with the Smokies after being selected as a Florida State League all-star at Single A Daytona, had struggled this spring with the Cubs, managing just one hit with eight strikeouts in 16 at bats.

Szczur, 23, hit a combined .267 with 68 stolen bases, 92 runs scored and 38 extra-base hits in 438 at bats with Daytona and Tennessee last season.

Szczur graduated from Lower Cape May in 2007 after starring in both baseball and football. He was an all-star level player in both sports at Villanova and was selected by the Cubs in the fifth round on the Major League Baseball entry draft in 2010.
