ATLANTIC CITY – Cory Damiana enjoyed the most success of the three Lower Cape May Regional High School wrestlers at the state championships Friday night at Boardwalk Hall.

Damiana, a junior, narrowly missed advancing to the quarterfinal round at 195 pounds. He scored a 5-4 win over Rutherford’s Jake Regina in the preliminary round. Regina was seeded fourth overall in the weight class. But Damiana suffered a very difficult loss in the pre-quarterfinal round, losing a 6-5 decision to Moorestown’s Tyreek Smith. Damiana was winning the bout late in the third period until Smith scored a takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Lower’s two other wrestlers at states both lost preliminary-round matches. Eric Pruszinski fell by 7-1 decision to Dean Caravela of Caldwell at 106 pounds and Zach Hicks dropped a 7-2 decision to Dan Heddon of South Plainfield at 113 pounds.

The state wrestling championships continue today at Boardwalk Hall.
