CAPE MAY – The Middle Township High School boys tennis team captured the team championship at the annual Cape May Tennis Club high school round robin tournament held Saturday morning.

The tournament featured individuals and doubles teams competing in one set each against the rest of the competition. Winners were determined by total games won.

In addition to Middle Township, the tournament included Lower Cape May, Vineland, Neshaminy (Pa.) and Jenkintown (Pa.).

Middle Township won at third singles and both doubles positions to earn the team title.

Lower Cape May’s Jeff Smith was the overall individual winner, taking first place at No. 1 singles. Vineland’s Andrew Massaro captured first place at No. 2 singles. Middle Township’s Tanner Kerr claimed top honors at third singles.

In doubles action, Middle’s Ben Bright and Elliot Dingler were first at No. 1 and Ben Casper and Stephen Hoy won at No. 2.

The team championship was Middle’s sixth in the last seven seasons at the event.

Lower Cape May continued its solid season Monday with a 5-0 win over Bridgeton to improve to 6-2 for the season. Smith, Alec Levin and Robbie McClernan each won singles matches in straight sets.

Middle has not played a team match since beating Cedar Creek late last week to improve to 6-1.

A number of players from Middle and Lower participated in the first round of the Cape-Atlantic League Tournament on Tuesday at Vineland. Middle’s Dini Ukella and Tanner Kerr and Lower’s Smith each won first-round singles matches in straight sets. Lower’s Justin Rife and Bob Lubberman won a first-round doubles match. The tournament was scheduled to continue Wednesday, although inclement weather most likely caused a postponement. Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 6.
