Lower, Middle, advance in girls lacrosse playoffs

The Lower Cape May Regional and Middle Township high school girls lacrosse teams each won South Jersey Group II playoff games Wednesday afternoon.

Lower Cape May pulled off an upset according to seeding, the ninth-seeded Lady Tigers going on the road to beat No. 8 Red Bank, 16-12.

Madie Gibson and Ashley Hunt each scored five goals to lead Lower Cape May (11-4), which raced out to an 11-2 halftime lead. Emily Levin and Logan Walter each added three goals.

Lower will play at top-seeded Red Bank Catholic on Monday. RBC was a 20-1 winner over Monmouth in its tournament opener.

Middle Township, the third seed in the tournament, secured its place in the second round with a comfortable 20-9 win over No. 13 Sterling. Bridget Ruskey, Allison Hunter, Maddie Anagnou and Jenna Herlihy each provided four goals for the winners. Amanda Bartha, Julianna Riggitano, Danielle McCann and Summer Herlihy also added goals.

Middle (18-0) will host No. 6 Manasquan in a second-round game Monday. Manasquan edged Delran, 8-7, in the opening round.
