JOE MALOY Wildwood Catholic High School graduate Joe Maloy continues to impress at elite-level triathlon events throughout the world.

Maloy, a Wildwood Crest native, posted a pair of top 20 finishes at two major International Triathlon Union (ITU) races held in the Orient earlier this month.

Last weekend, Maloy placed 19th overall and was the first American finisher at the ITU World Triathlon Yokohama held in Japan’s second-largest city. He finished the course, which includes the traditional international triathlon standards of a 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run, in 1 hour, 48 minutes, 17 seconds.

One weekend earlier, Maloy was 11th overall and only 50 seconds behind first place at the Chengdu ITU Triathlon World Cup in western China, finishing in 1:49:37.

Maloy is next scheduled to compete much closer to home at the Dallas PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships on May 31.

Maloy is currently the top-ranked American under the ITU points system. His goal is to earn a place on the U.S. Olympic team for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Maloy, 28, is a 2004 graduate of Wildwood Catholic, where he starred in swimming and cross country. He later earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Boston College, where he was a four-year member of the swim team before later serving as an assistant coach. Maloy is also a former member of the Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol. He currently resides in San Diego.
