The Cape Express U-15 boys soccer team’s glorious run through the New Jersey State Cup tournament ended one victory shy of a championship.

After a scoreless first half, Marlboro scored twice in quick succession and held on for a 2-1 victory to win the title in the age group Sunday afternoon.

The New Jersey State Cup is a single-elimination tournament involving youth soccer teams of the same age levels from throughout the state. Separate tournaments are held during the fall and spring seasons.

Cape Express had won its four previous Cup games to reach the tournament’s final four. On Saturday, Victor Figueroa scored twice and goalkeeper Anthony Zampirri made a key save on a breakaway to lead Cape Express to a 2-1 victory over Toms River in the semifinal round, qualifying the team for Sunday’s title game. Figueroa’s winner came less than four minutes from full time.

Jimmy Flukey scored the lone goal for Cape Express in the championship game defeat to Marlboro.

The Cape Express U-15 team is made up of players from Middle Township, Ocean City, Wildwood Catholic and St. Augustine Prep high schools. The team is coached by Matt Lucas.
