Miss Night in Venice 2013 was crowned recently on the stage at the Moorlyn Family Theatre before a crowd of family and friends. After turning in their money at noon at Ocean City Home Bank, contestants had their hair coifed, manicures and such and arrived at Fifth Street and Boardwalk in long gowns ready for the parade.

Miss Ocean City 2014 will be crowned on the Music Pier stage Saturday night as 17 young ladies compete for the title.

The pageant, sponsored by the Ocean City Exchange Club, hosted an ice-breaker recently at the clubhouse at Ocean Reef where contestants met with committee members and hostesses. Warren Iredell and Bill Culp were unloading ice chests when Andrea Paul and this columnist arrived.

The Ocean City Exchange Club held their annual installation dinner at the Tuckahoe Inn recently. Andrea Paul, Irene Reeves, Carol Heenan and I staked out a table in the dining room for 12 then enjoyed the social hour.

The Friends of the Ocean City Pops hosted an opening night reception at The Flanders Hotel immediately following the opening night concert featuring the Canadian Brass Quintet at the Music Pier.

Friends of the Ocean City Pops hosted their annual gala at the Greate Bay Country Club on a beautiful summer evening. Jim and I met Maribeth Neall and Mary Ann Jones in the parking lot and when Jim walked in with three blondes, he was the envy of all the men in the room.

A large crowd gathered at the Tuckahoe Inn recently when the Exchange Club hosted members of OCNJ CARE at their Monday night dinner.

I enjoyed catching up with Julie and Rick Becker, who showed me pictures of their children, Sarah and Bill. During dinner, Frank McCall presented plaques to sponsors of the Roger LaRosa Golf Klassic then introduced Drew Fasy, chairman of OCNJ CARE, and committee members who worked tirelessly following Hurricane Sandy.

The Harry Vanderslice/Jack Davis Memorial Golf Tournament was held recently at the Greate Bay Country Club. Scott Vanderslice drove up from North Carolina and welcomed 150 golfers after lunch as they hit the course with a shotgun start at 1.

St. Peter’s United Methodist Women held a Hawaiian Luau Fashion Extravaganza and Luncheon recently at the Greate Bay Country Club. Marion McCaughey and this columnist headed up this fundraiser with all proceeds going to United Methodist Women Mission projects near and far.

It was a great day at the Greate Bay Country Club for the Roger LaRosa Golf Klassic sponsored by the Exchange Club of Ocean City.

Roger was the last of the charter members of the Exchange Club, founded in 1947, who served as president in 1948. Over one hundred golfers turned out for the fundraiser with proceeds going to OCNJ CARE.

Warm sunshine and cool ocean breezes greeted guests at they arrived at The Flanders for the fifth annual Author’s Tea. Elaine Novello wore a shocking pink jacket as she guarded the stairs until it was time to let guests go up.

 Around Our Town

The 24th annual Stainton Society Brunch was held recently at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City.  Marion and Ned McCaughey made the rounds in their van picking up Irene and George Reeves, just back from the winter in Florida, then stopped for Jim and I and headed over the Ocean Drive Bridge to the brunch.  We met up with Linda and Curt Gronert as we went up the escalator to Ovation Hall where the social hour was in full swing.
