HAMILTON TOWNSHIP - Atlantic County has formed a support group, Parent-to-Parent, to help parents of incarcerated youth.

The first session is 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 at the training unit of the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility, 5060 Atlantic Ave.

"Substance abuse and addiction are prevalent among our youth and often lead to incarceration,” said Warden Joseph Bondiskey. “Many parents tell me of the guilt they experience as a direct result of a child being in jail. They are often left feeling isolated and alone. The purpose of this group is to provide support and access to local resources to help minimize those feelings."

While the county jail has implemented an extensive discharge planning program to reduce recidivism and transition inmates upon their return to their communities, officials acknowledge the need to include assistance for parents as part of the program.
The Parent-to-Parent support group will address guilt, anxiety, depression, substance abuse and coping skills as well as provide participants with comfort, encouragement and guidance, he said.

A licensed clinical social worker and the parent of an inmate will serve as co-facilitators. Plans are for the group to meet each month.

Members will select future meeting dates on Feb. 7.
