HAMILTON TOWNSHIP – A Deptford man was sentenced to five years in prison for attempted luring and attempted sexual assault in connection with trying to meet with a “14-year-old girl” he met on an Internet chat room, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said.

On Oct. 5, 2011, Michael Schiavo, 53, was arrested in Mays Landing for attempted luring and attempted sexual assault, after arriving at a location where he intended to meet an individual whom he believed to be a 14-year-old girl for a sexual encounter. However, at the scheduled meeting location, detectives from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hamilton Township Police Department met Schiavo instead.

Prior to arranging the sexual encounter, Schiavo was soliciting the “14-year-old girl”, who was really an undercover Prosecutor’s Office Detective, in an Internet chat room.

Schiavo was taken into custody and subsequently released after posting $100,000 bail.

On Aug. 29, 2012, Schiavo entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to second-degree attempted luring and second-degree attempted sexual assault. Assistant Prosecutor Janet Gravitz represented the case for the state.

On Friday, Jan. 18, in accordance with the plea agreement, Superior Court Judge Mark Sandson sentenced Schiavo to five years New Jersey state prison. Schiavo will also be subject to parole supervision for life and required to register in accordance with Megan’s Law requirements.

Following sentencing, Schiavo was remanded into custody.
