The Jan-Ai Scholarship Fund is offering $500 to $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors pursuing college degrees in the arts, including but not limited to music, visual arts, graphic arts, theater and dance. For an application see www.jan-aischolar.org. The deadline for applications is May 13.

The Jan-Ai Scholarship Fund was created to honor the memory of Ventnor native Jennifer Cakert, a writer, poet and author who passed away in June 2006 at the age of 26. It was established by her aunt to help young people follow their passion in the arts.

According to the fund website, Jan-Ai was the nickname given to Cakert by her father, Chuck, who died when she was 9. It comes from the movie "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" and means "one who loves people."

The fund has awarded $76,664 in scholarships and cash to 200 recipients since April 2007. It is trying to reach a goal of $100,000 by 2014.

Donations can be made via Paypal on the website or by check or money order mailed to PO Box 8068, Atlantic City, N.J. 08404.
