To the editor:
Law enforcement officers in South Jersey play an essential role in our communities – keeping us safe. While we occasionally hear of threats and crime, theirs is a daily, personal risk to ensure that our families and property are protected. Fortunately, 2013 brought no tragedy in the line of duty for New Jersey officers.
This week, as we celebrate National Law Enforcement Week, let us honor and remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty in communities across the country. In total, 286 names will join the more than 19,000 fallen law enforcement officers on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The names of those fallen officers memorialized can be found at www.policeweek.org.
We must never forget the courage of the officers who place themselves daily in harm’s way, the communities they serve and the families who support our local heroes. More importantly, we must always let them know we appreciate their service, their courage and their dedication to duty.
