Seedings, schedule set for CAL hoops tournament

The seedings and the schedule for the highly anticipated inaugural Cape-Atlantic League boys and girls basketball tournament have been set.

The six-team tournaments, which include the top two teams from each of the league’s three conferences, will begin on Friday evening.

In boys basketball, National Conference champion St. Augustine Prep and American Conference champion Atlantic City have received the respective first and second seeds and have earned first-round byes. United Conference co-champion Wildwood Catholic has earned the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Middle Township on Friday at 7 p.m., while Pleasantville, co-National Conference champions with the Crusaders, is seeded fourth and will host No. 5 Holy Spirit, also on Friday evening.

The Middle Township-Wildwood Catholic game will be broadcast live on 98.7 FM radio.

The boys tournament then moves to Hammonton High School for the semifinal round on Tuesday, Feb. 21. No. 2 Atlantic City will play the highest remaining seed at 5 p.m., with No. 1 St. Augustine Prep playing the lowest remaining seed at 7 p.m.

The boys championship game will be played Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. at Richard Stockton College.

For the girls tournament, United Conference champion Sacred Heart and National Conference winner Ocean City are the respective 1 and 2 seeds. Each will receive a first-round bye. On Friday, third-seeded Holy Spirit will host No. 6 Atlantic City, while fourth-seeded Middle Township will play at home against No. 5 Cedar Creek at 7 p.m.

The girls semifinals will be held Wednesday, Feb. 22 at St. Augustine Prep. As the No. 2 seed, Ocean City will play the highest remaining seed at 5 p.m., with No. 1 Sacred Heart taking on the lowest remaining seed at 7 p.m.

The girls championship game will be played at 12 noon on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Stockton.
