BROOKLYN – Angel Martinez, a graduate of Pleasantville High School, enjoyed an impressive debut as a member of the New Jersey City University volleyball team. The freshman helped lead the Gothic Knights in the 2012 season-opening match, as NJCU powered past the Polytechnic Institute of New York University on Monday, Jan. 23.

Martinez made the most of his first opportunity with the team, hitting .500 with five kills, five digs and two aces at the Jacobs Center. The Gothic Knights swept NYU-Polly (26-24, 25-18, 25-15) to secure a win in the school’s inaugural match as a member of the Skyline Conference.

Martinez plays the libero position, which originated internationally before the NCAA introduced it in 2002. The libero specializes in defensive skills and serves a variety of functions on the court.

Matinez was a member of Pleasantville’s volleyball team and also played basketball while attending the high school. He currently studies Criminal Justice in Jersey City.
