GALLOWAY – Four Absegami High School seniors signed their national letter of intent with the collegiate athletic programs of their choice on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The act meant that each of the student athletes, all girls, accepted their respective scholarship conditions and agreed to university academic standards.

Feb. 1 was National Signing Day, an annual event when high school athletes across the country confirm their commitment to attend a specific school in the upcoming fall semester. Essentially, it is the culmination of a lengthy recruiting process that presents outstanding senior athletes with various post-secondary athletic and academic options.

Absegami softball pitcher Kelly Lupton signed her commitment to the University of Maryland. She is coming off a dominant junior season in which she led the Braves to a Group IV playoff appearance with her talents on the mound and at the plate.

Lupton finished last spring with 19 victories and gave up an average of less than one run per game. She already holds Absegami’s career strikeouts record, with plenty more likely to come in 2012.

Lupton also contributed at the plate as a junior. She belted four home runs and collected 30 runs batted in.

A trio of Absegami girls soccer players also firmed up their commitments to college programs.

Erica Skroski, signed on to play soccer at Rutgers University. Teammate Alexis Robinson will play for Catawba College, and Kelsey Tierney committed to join Iona College’s soccer team.

Skroski, a midfielder, was honored as an All-State selection at the end of her senior season. She tallied 15 goals and led the Braves to a second-straight appearance in the South Jersey Coaches Tournament.

Skroski emerged as one of the Cape-Atlantic League’s most complete players during her career. She will join a Scarlet Knights women’s soccer program that perennially contends in the Big East Conference of Division I.

Robinson spent her senior season alongside Skroski in the midfield. She earned All-League honors while helping anchor Absegami’s defense in 2011.

Robinson is headed for a Division II career at Catawba College, which is located in Salisbury, N.C.

Tierney contributed to the team as a tenacious defender. She excelled at the fullback position and helped Absegami limit CAL opponents to just 10 goals in 2011.

Tierney is headed to Iona College (New Rochelle, N.Y.) as part of the Division I women’s soccer program’s freshman class.
