History keeps changing

To the editor:

History is frequently being changed. New books contradict old books. A fact one year is dismissed as a fib the next years, leading readers to conclude the past is less solid than formerly supposed.

Upper does not pay more for less

To the editor:

My family moved to Upper Township from Cumberland County almost four years ago for two reasons: low taxes and good schools.

We spent more money on a house here than we would have in other areas we looked, but overall moving to Upper was a better "deal" than any other area in South Jersey. Our taxes are lower here than they were where we lived before, considerably lower in fact. And the schools are considerably better. It's just a better way of life in general, we think. The value proposition is obvious (at least to us) when comparing Upper Township to neighboring areas.

The Strathmere Post Office reduced its window service from eight hours to four hours in the afternoon starting Monday, May 20.

Last week's paper, which indicated that "Strathmere residents opposed the change and tried to get the post office to remain open in the mornings” did not tell the whole story.

Sign case was about township not following its own rules

 To the editor:

Here’s an update on the Grubb v. Upper Township zoning officer Shelly Lea. For those of you not aware of the situation, in October of 2012 Ms. Lea removed my 18x24 KG Landscaping business sign from the woods line of my parents’ property on Route 50 without notifying anyone in anyway. I went to Township Hall to inquire if she did take the sign and she confirmed she did, claiming it was in the right of way of the state highway and I was not allowed to have it based on the ordinance. I informed her it was on private property and not the state’s property and asked if I could read the sign ordinance, which she produced for me. I read the entire ordinance and when I finished I asked her where it stated she could take my sign. The only answer was “That’s just what we do, the county does, the state does it, and that’s what we do.” I asked where the sign was and she informed me it might still be in the dumpster.

School budget spends more for less

To the editor:

It is school budget time again in Upper Township and we are hearing the same old thing. That it is a barebones budget but it increases about two percent, which happens to be the state cap figure. We are told that we must increase spending to the cap or we will lose money next year.

Protect dogs in your neighborhood from freezing

To the editor:

Another dog in the Philadelphia area was found frozen to death this week. The last few years several deaths in both Atlantic and Cape May County New Jersey were reported. Who knows how many more deaths there were that no one knew about? Before another tragedy like this happens, please pay attention to your neighborhood. You possibly could save the life of a dog if you do.  Pets left outside in extreme temperatures without food and shelter are at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and even death, placing their owners at risk of facing criminal charges.

To the editor:

This is my attempt to enlighten Upper Township voters on the politics in our little community. First, let me emphatically state that no one is against our rescue squad as Mayor Richard Palombo would like you to believe.

Lack of leadership led to tax hike

To the editor:

I want to let the voters know that I am a Republican. The 21 years I’ve lived and paid taxes here, I’ve never been asked to join an organization called PRO (People’s Republican Organization). Therefore, I do not recognize this organization as a Republican organization.

Combining planning, zoning boards would not save money

I read with interest of Committeeman Tony Inserra’s desire to do away with the zoning board and planning board and to create a combined zoning/planning board.

Clerk: Township has made great strides in past 10 years

Written by Opinion Tuesday, October 09, 2012 01:00 am

To the editor:

For those of you who don’t know me I am your Municipal Clerk, at least for another couple of weeks. Although it has been common knowledge for quite a while that I was retiring, I formally submitted my notice of retirement at the township committee meeting this past Tuesday (Oct. 9). The decision is bittersweet for me. As the Municipal Clerk I have never worked harder at a job; however I have truly loved every minute of it.
