Budget workshop scheduled for Monday
PETERSBURG – Township Committee has scheduled a budget workshop for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27 at Township Hall. Committee’s regular meeting will follow at 7:30 p.m.
A budget workshop earlier this month cut $108,000 from the proposed 2012 budget. Committee members said the cuts will result in a zero tax rate increase for property owners here. Any additional savings will go to the township’s fund balance, or surplus, which officials want to build back up.
The fund balance is at $20,000 this year, the lowest it has ever been. Last year, when the township instituted its first local purpose tax in more than 50 years, the fund balance was at $40,000.
Committee backs Bark for Life event
PETERSBURG – Committee members last week said they would pay the $50 to sponsor the American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life fundraiser at Amanda’s Field in June.
The Bark for Life would have had to pay a $50 fee to use Amanda’s Field since it is not a local organization or non-profit, according to an ordinance approved last year. The ordinance initiated fees for the use of township facilities by outside groups for the first time. It exempts local organizations.
Township solicitor Dan Young said the committee could not waive the fee as that would be discriminatory. Deputy Mayor Curtis Corson, Jr. then suggested that each committee member donate $10 to cover the fee.
“It’s covered,” he said.
Bark for Life, scheduled for June 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Amanda’s Field, will raise funds for the American Cancer Society and honor the contributions of four-legged caregivers.
There will be doggie games, doggie kissing booths, top dog and dress contests, team and community fundraising, musical entertainment and lots of food. There will also be beautiful hand-knit doggie sweaters, home-made doggie treats and candy.
Many survivors do not have family or friends but have canine caregivers. Bark for Life gives these cancer survivors a chance to participate and be empowered in the fight against cancer.
