UPPER TOWNSHIP – This Sunday, June 17 is Father's Day and people everywhere are scrambling to get their dad the perfect gift, or at least figure out a way to honor their father in a special way. It has been going on since 1910 when a day to honor fathers was first celebrated.
When my own daughters used to ask me what to get their dad I always countered with "What does Dad like, what are his interests?"
Now that they are older they are really very good at selecting gifts for us because they put their minds to it ahead of time.
So what about your own dad? Is he a sports fan or a handyman? Does he like to fish, listen to music, work on landscaping, stay fit, cook? I asked several people what they are getting their dads for Father's Day and I asked some dads what they would like. Here is a sampling of answers that may help. Some names have been withheld to keep it a surprise.
"A traveler’s coffee mug because he goes to Wawa all the time."
"He could use a new beach chair, so I guess that's what I'm getting him."
"A new Phillies' baseball cap. His old one is so beat up and it's hardly red any more."
"We're building him a bonfire pit in the backyard."
"I made my dad a fishing pole holder in woodshop."
"Definitely a card, and anything else I'm still working on."
"We are all going bowling because he likes bowling."
"I'm going to give him a homemade coupon to wash his car for him and a Father's Day card."
Cathy Ludlam, of Steelmantown, got her dad a gift certificate to a barber shop for an old-fashioned straight razor shave.
Tyler Pollock is getting his dad power tools.
Nick Barbieri will get a new beach chair for his dad.
Melanie Humphrey is getting her dad a new phone case.
Maddie Lance said her Dad likes the “Life is Good” T-shirts.
And what about the dads? What would they like? Frank Granieri, of Ocean View, hopes to get a fishing rod.
Dave Bruce told me a gift certificate for a charter boat out of Cape May would be nice. And Mike Annarelli, of Seaville, spoke of the request that is surely on the minds of many dads. He said he works so much and would just like to be able to spend time with his family.
So there you have it, I hope this helps. Spend time with dad, and whatever you get him he will surely love.
