MARMORA – Local Knights of Columbus and dozens of volunteers met at the Church of the Resurrection in Marmora Saturday morning to deliver food, clothing and toys to 190 families in Cape May County.

The effort has become a Christmas tradition for Msgr. James J. Zegers Resurrection Council 9113. The Knights of Columbus chapter has been organizing the deliveries for 20 years.

Knights and volunteers loaded up boxes with canned goods and a turkey, chicken or oven roaster depending on the size of the family. If there were kids in the home, they also received a bag of toys for Christmas.

Families in need are identified through the St. Casimir Thrift Shop in Woodbine. The St. Vincent DePaul Society and nurses in Upper Township and Ocean City also helped add to the list.

“This is the essence of what (the Knights) are all about,” said Father Peter Joyce, pastor at the Church of the Resurrection. “This exemplifies who they are.”

Joyce said donations of toys and food from the community was larger this year, perhaps because of Hurricane Sandy.

“The response is always great but this year, I don’t know if it was because of Sandy, but people really supported us,” he said.
