UPPER TOWNSHIP – Six inches of new snow could not have come at a better time for Boy Scout Troop 95 of Upper Township, as 16 scouts took to the slopes of Blue Mountain ski resort over the weekend.

Most of the scouts had never been on a snowboard or skis, said troop chairman John Castaldi. Everyone learned at their own pace, but by the end of the first night most were coming down the mountain, he said.

"Some more gracefully than others,” he joked.

The mountain had an area set aside for first time skiers, with a gentle slope and a "magic carpet" instead of an intimidating chair lift, Castaldi said. As the scouts put on their gear, they were instructed how to glide, stop and turn. Once they mastered the basics, it was onto the chairlift to the bigger hills.

As the night grew darker and colder, scouts enjoyed a slope-side campfire, and hot chocolate.

Troop 95 recently received top honors at the Winter Klondike Derby. Scouts had to navigate a course modeled after the Alaskan gold rush, and complete challenges at each city. Their skills were tested in first aid, orienteering, camping, cooking and other outdoor skills.

Castaldi said the scouts are looking forward to their next trip, which will be a tour of Washington, D.C. The troop will spend three days exploring the Smithsonian and Air and Space museums, the U.S. Mint, and the Capitol. They will also lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Boy Scout Troop 95 has opened its membership to fifth graders. For more information, come to a meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Upper Township Primary School or visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/troop95.
