60-year-old, 6-year-old escape house fire

PETERSBURG – Fire companies from Marmora, Seaville and Tuckahoe responded to a large structure fire on the 500 block of Rt. 50 in Petersburg late Thursday night.

Two occupants, a 60-year-old woman and a 6-year-old child, were awoken by fire alarms and escaped with minor injuries.

Both occupants were evaluated at the scene and released to a family member.

A dog and two cats did not survive, according to a press release from the Upper Township Rescue Squad.

Firefighters from Dennis Township and Ocean City provided mutual aid. The Upper Township Rescue Squad and the Belleplain Emergency Corps were also on hand to provide assistance.

Emergency responders received a call for the multi-alarm fire at a two-story home around 10:39 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. Rt. 50 was closed and Rt. 610 to Tyler Road was shut down for several hours while firefighters fought the blaze.

When units arrived, the structure was well involved with heavy fire, according to the press release. It took firefighters several hours to extinguish the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
