PALERMO – An Ocean City High School junior recently completed a six-day program at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Lindsey Wan of Palermo was selected to participate in a session of the Naval Academy Summer Seminar held last week.

“I was interested in going because I want to go to the Naval Academy for college,” Wan said. “It was originally my younger brother who was interested. My mother and I took him down for a day camp there a couple of years ago and while we were waiting for him to finish up we decided to take a tour of the campus and the surrounding area and I pretty much fell in love with the Academy.”

The Naval Academy Summer Seminar is a six-day experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school. The seminar teaches students about life at the Naval Academy.

Enrollees live in Bancroft Hall, the dormitory where all Academy midshipmen live, eat in the dining hall, participate in academic and leadership workshops and experience a variety of other activities on the campus.

Wan said her squad received the Hit Squad Award, which is given to the squad that performed the best overall.

“We were able to motivate each other and ultimately become a family,” she said. “That's also what impressed me about the Naval Academy. The camaraderie was paramount.”

Students also attend eight 90-minute workshops from Saturday through Thursday. The topics include engineering, martial arts, seamanship and navigation.

Wan is a member of the Ocean City High School crew team. She will be a senior in the high school next year.
