A column of black smoke rising from the horizon off the coast of Sea Isle City this morning has been identified by the Coast Guard as a vessel underway.

Lt. John Suckow, a spokesman at USCG Training Center Cape May, said the Coast Guard fielded several calls about the smoke Monday morning.

“We have received a few calls,” he said. “It’s been identified it as a vessel underway emitting black smoke from its stack.”

Suckow could not identify the ship, but said that there were no other issues.

The thick smoke could be seen for many miles along the beach. As of about 7:30 a.m. Monday, a column of thick black smoke continued to rise above the horizon.
