If you’ve waited all month for the perfect day to rake leaves or climb the roof to put up holiday lights and other decorations, you’re in luck.

The first day of winter could bring record warmth to South Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware, according to the National Weather Service. Some places could reach temperatures that are 20-25 degrees warmer than normal.

After a cool start, possible record warmth

It’s difficult to imagine that a month that has averaged almost 2 degrees colder than normal could cough up such a turnaround just as the winter solstice approaches.

But it’s true, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

High temperatures on Saturday, Dec. 21 and Sunday, Dec. 22 could approach the mid- to upper-60s, smashing records for the date, the National Weather Service said.

Most local daily high temperature records are in the lower 60s for Saturday, Dec. 21 and in the middle-60s on Sunday, Dec. 22.

Of course, the further south you go, the warmer it will be. However, nearly everybody in South Jersey and the rest of the Middle Atlantic States should enjoy temperatures nearly 20-25 degrees warmer than normal, the Weather Service said.

South Jersey high temperatures for Dec. 21, Dec. 22

Here’s are some of the forecast highs suggested by the National Weather Service for Sunday, Dec. 22: Cape May, 65 degrees; Egg Harbor City, 67; Port Republic, 65; Cherry Hill, 70; Vineland, 68; Toms River, 65; Hammonton, 68; Ocean City, 64; Chatsworth, 67 and Dennisville, 66.

Even Scranton, Pa., in the heart of the Pocono Mountains ski country, will reach 62 degrees on Sunday, Dec. 22.

South Jersey Cool down for Christmas

Enjoy it while you can, forecasters say. The up-and-down temperature pattern that has been in place for the past 90 days will remain with us. Temperatures are expected to cool down to their proper December levels just in time for Christmas on Dec. 25.
