South Jersey high temperature readings on Saturday, Dec. 21 – the first day of winter – surprised even seasoned meteorologists.

According to the National Weather Service Mount Holly Forecast Center, the high temperature reading at the Atlantic City International Airport in Egg Harbor smashed the old record and raised many eyebrows.

Saturday’s South Jersey high reached 67 degrees at the airport, where the National Weather Service keeps official records.

Earlier forecasts had predicted Saturday’s high temperature to reach only the middle 60s. However, temperatures actually warmed up overnight giving South Jersey thermometers a head start on Saturday on their quest toward record territory.

The previous record for Dec. 21 was 63 degrees set back in 2011, according to the National Weather Service.

Wilmington, Del. Hit 68 degrees and Georgetown, Del., topped out at 72, the National Weather Service said.
