June was both warmer-than-normal and colder-than-normal at the same time. Here is how:

The average daily high temperature for South Jersey was 81.5 degrees as measured by the National Weather Service at the Atlantic City International Airport in Egg Harbor Township. That is about .9 of a degree warmer than the current 30-year average.

So how was June 2014 colder than normal, you ask?

The average daily low temperature for the month was 60.3 degrees, or about .9 of a degree colder than normal.

Those who enjoy their first cup of coffee in the morning out on the back deck may have noticed the difference.

So when you combined those readings for an overage daily average temperature, South Jersey came in – you guessed it – average for the month at 70.9 degrees.

So what does it all mean?

Well, the lingering lower-than-normal temperatures in the mornings could be a result of last winter’s deep chill when temperatures were about 5 degrees colder than normal.

Also, the higher-than-normal daily high readings might indicate that above-normal temperatures are ready to return for the rest of the summer.

Here are a few other weather related highlights from June 2014:

On 21 days, the temperature reached 80 degrees or more, including a two-day jaunt into the 90s on June 17 (94) and June 18 (95).

The early morning low temperature retreated to 43 degrees on June 2.

Only 1.54 inches of rain fell in June 2014, about half of the normal amount.

Only a trace of rain fell during the four weekends of June.
