A severe thunderstorm capable of heavy rain, lightning, tropical storm force winds and possible tornado rotation has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning for Atlantic and Cape May counties.  According to the National Weather Serive, a severe thunderstorm was located near Millville at 11:03 p.m. and moving northeast at 25 mph. The storm is capable of winds in excess of 60 mph. Some rotation was occurring meaning a tornado could develop, the National Weather Service said.

The storm will be near Mixpah around 11:30 and Mays Landing around 11:40 and continue to the Northeast from there.

“Doppler radar has indicated some rotation within this storm,” the National Weather Service said. “While not immediately likely, a tornado may still developm If a tornado is spotted, act quickly and move to a place of safety in a sturdy structure such as a basement or small interior room on the lowest floor.

The severe thunderstorm warning will expire at midnight, the National Weather Service said.
