Families were a big part of celebration
Written by Joyce Gould Tuesday, September 27, 2011 05:05 pm
Last weekend was the 26th annual Seafarers Celebration in the borough of Wildwood Crest at Sunset Lake. It was a perfect day for a festival because there was limited sunshine and other events throughout the Wildwoods made participation available for many on the island.
The events started at 9 a.m., and ended at 5 p.m. There were craft vendors with wares for Halloween, Christmas (never too early for Christmas), wooden items, pillows and baby clothes. There were T-shirts for your dogs and they made a dog tag while you waited. By the way, it was a field day for dogs at the lake consisting of every kind you can imagine- Labradors, German shepherds, poodles, English bulldogs, and more.
Golf tourney remembers Bob Doherty
Written by Joyce Gould Thursday, September 22, 2011 02:06 pm
Caroline Doherty wants to keep the memory of her son Bob alive. For the past 16 years she has had a golf tournament in his memory. The proceeds from this outing go to benefit the high schools in the Wildwoods, both Wildwood Catholic and Wildwood High School.
Bob Doherty was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing and golfing. Those that knew him would agree that the annual Bob Doherty Golf Tournament is just the kind of event he would have wanted.
This is no ordinary golf outing. In fact my husband remarked that he has never seen so many prizes -- and so many great ones -- at any golf tourney he entered. There were 72 golfers at the Sand Barrens Golf Club and there was a great weather Friday, Sept. 16.
Beef and beer for the ‘Love of Victor’
Written by Joyce Gould Wednesday, September 14, 2011 12:04 pm
I never met Victor Krivitski, but from all I’ve heard about him I wish I had. At 21, Krivitski died from Medistinal Germ Cell Cancer and on Sept. 8 at the Bayview, Victor’s friends had a beef and beer to remember him and to raise money to help with his medical expenses.
The Bayview was very crowded. Many came from Lower Township, the Wildwoods and Middle Township. Paula Carroll was there with her daughter who has just returned from Africa with the Peace Corp and she heads back to Africa in several weeks. David Burns, a big supporter of Love of Linda was there and seated with Cindy Fineberg, Bob and Ginny Fineberg and Bonnie and Bob Donahue. Ginny Fineberg told me that she has known Victor “since his inception” and that she brought him his favorite sandwich when he was feeling poorly. Ginny Fineberg worked with Roxanne Krivitski in the Sandpiper Embroidery store for many years and now Roxanne is a nurse at Cape Regional Hospital, and when she can, still works at the Sandpiper. Victor’s dad Vic Krivitski operates Algie’s bicycle shop in Wildwood Crest.
Five Mile Beat > Crest says farewell to Jim Davies

Jim Davies, auto mechanic extraordinaire, retired from the Borough of Wildwood Crest, Aug. 31 after 19 years as the supervisor of the motor pool.
Since he came to work for Wildwood Crest, he has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the borough vehicles, which include everything from police cars to trash trucks, street sweepers to beach jeeps. Anything you can think of, Jim has repaired it. In fact it was very rare for him to have had to send out a vehicle to get repaired when he couldn’t get it fixed.

Five Mile Beat > Crest Ball celebrates its lifeguards
Written by Joyce Gould Tuesday, August 23, 2011 09:45 am
The 91st Lifeguard Ball was held last week at Lighthouse Pointe and it honored those members of the Wildwood Crest lifeguard patrol. The event organizers believe that the Crest is the only patrol that still honors their members at a ball and suggested this one was as successful as many before it.
The patrol is made up of men and women who do a marvelous job for their municipality. Wherever you are bathing on whatever beach, know that the Wildwoods take great pride in their Lifeguards all over this island.
Chief Bud Johnson called the patrol to order and senior Lt. Max Bilkins helped give out the awards to the deserving guards and they were many to give. The dynamic duo of Brendan Cunningham and Terry McGovern were the surprise winners of the 36th annual Bud Tarbotton Memorial North Wildwood Beach Patrol Around the Island Row . One week before the actual row the two tried out the course and it took them just over 4 hours, and when they actually did the race they won by doing the row in 2 hours 11 minutes and 49 seconds. The women doubles row champion were Wylie Wilson and Gabby Szlachta. John Maloy won swim champion male as well as run-swim champion and Iron Man champion. In the women’s division swim champion Greta Reichert, paddle board champion Rose Brenner, two mile run champion Grace Lederer (also Miss North Wildwood), iron man champion Mary Chew and surf dash champions Rose Brenner, Leeny Tarnowski, Christina Caroulis, Gabby Szlachta-McGinn, and Leah Oresic. The surf dash champions male were John Maloy, Nick Ranalli, Terry Mcgovern, Gabe Keown, and Steve Zamulinsky. Paddleboard champion was Tye Cameron, and two-mile run was Kevin McDonnell.

Five Mile Beat >‘Girls night out’ for Women’s Resource Fund

The Cape Women’s Resource Fund held its second annual “Girl’s Night Out,” upstairs at Neil’s Island Pub and Grille in downtown Wildwood on Thursday Aug. 11, and continued with a performance of “Steel Magnolias” at Cape May Stage, in Cape May City.
There were 93 women who participated in the evening’s festivities and we had a great time. The fund provides scholarship money for young women who graduate from Cape May County High Schools. Last year the fund gave out six scholarships to area seniors.
Rita Fulginiti, the chairwoman of the fund and the county clerk, welcomed the women and invited all to have a wonderful evening. Jamie Mancini of Neil’s did a great job of feeding all of us fine cheeses, a wine bar, and cocktails.
Dinner was a southern feast to go together with the Steel Magnolias theme, which is set in Louisiana. We had fried chicken, jambalaya, pulled pork sliders, corn bread, collard greens, sweet mashed potatoes and white mashed potatoe, and for dessert double chocolate pecan pie and peach cobbler.

One of the biggest events in town each year, the 102nd Wildwood Baby Parade and luncheon took place on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

Five Mile Beat > Orr at the Shore and more this week
Written by Joyce Gould Monday, August 01, 2011 03:24 pm
This past week Kathy Orr came to Wildwood Crest to give CBS Channel 3, and The CW Television Network viewers a check on the weather. She also participated in a Zumba class, which is a workout dance class set to music.
Orr did the 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m. weather on the beach at Forget-Me-Not Road . More that 60 women demonstrated Zumba while I was asked about the fitness programs that the borough runs all summer including sculpting, cardio classes and kick boxing plus yoga and ‘yogalaties.’
Later that afternoon, the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce hosted a networking mixer at “Ocean Oasis at Morey’s Piers” in North Wildwood, and while the attendance was not great the food was delicious. It included scallops, meatball sliders, sesame chicken on a stick, crab cakes and for dessert red velvet cupcakes.
Those who were able to get out of work came for a few minutes included Karen Allen, Gene Hall, Art and Peg West from Westy’s Pub, Johnnie and Kate Walker, Rick Traber, Lindsey Young from the Morey Organization, Angel Daniels from Angel Daniels Public Relations, with Ron Gelzunas. Members of the chamber staff were Pat and Dr. Tom McGuigan, Erin Springer, Anne Bourke and Georgianna Kobbe. Also there were Ginny Nichols, the owner of the Sea Gull Motel, with her daughter Juliette Leary and her nephew Matt Nichols, who is visiting for the summer from Oregon. The afternoon was perfect for the outdoors. The event had the view of the beach on the east and water park and amusements on the west.

North Wildwood woman’s creation to be featured on QVC
Written by Joyce Gould Wednesday, July 27, 2011 04:42 pm
Renee McCartney of North Wildwood is a multitalented personality. The owner of Shore Couture, a boutique for the hip in the Wildwoods, she is now the creator of the Infinity Wrap.
McCartney’s love for fashion began when she was a child and watched her mother, who was a hairdresser, transform the looks of women who came to her. Her love of style and glamour was an asset when she created her store, which sells clothing and accessories for all occasions, and allows customers to design a signature scent at the custom perfume bar. The perfume bar is available for birthday parties, holidays and other occasions.

Five Mile Beat > Big weekend in the Wildwoods
Written by Joyce Gould Tuesday, July 19, 2011 01:43 pm
On Thursday July 14, I was asked to attend the annual “Geriatric Triathlon Tournament” which consisted of pool, darts and shuffleboard held at the Moose Lodge in North Wildwood.
Moose International began in the late 1800s with the modest goal of offering men an opportunity to gather socially, and it was reinvented during the first decade of the 20th century into an organizational group of men and women who set out to build a city that would brighten futures of thousands of children in need across north America, with Mooseheart Child City and School in Illinois.
