Five Mile Beat > Another January done and gone

There are three things that always happen in the last weekend of January. First, the Wildwood Crest Fire Company holds its annual Ladies Night Out and this year Jack Holland arranged to have it at La Piazza in Wildwood.
Around 75 attended and the opening remarks were made by Jim Ranalli, the president of the company. He welcomed everyone and told them to have a great night. Many proceeded to do just that, with good food and live music.
Sharon Stocker was on the dance floor with some of the other ladies and their husbands, Gary Stocker, Gary and Pam Aydelotte, and Tracey and Rob Neri, to name just a few. Dave Thompson, the new chief of the fire company, was with his wife Kathy and newest member Fred Mettler was with his wife Michele. Brothers-in-law Joe Cortese and Commissioner Tony Leonetti were there with their respective spouses Joanne and Toni. Chrissy and Ron Harwod were seated with their parents. Tony and Carla Chrietzberg were there with Albert and Amy Mahon and also Kelly Mahon. The women are all in the fire company auxiliary.
Kathy Popper was there selling tickets for Cape May Tech School. Bill Laffey was there with Donna Koss. Jim and Carol Saldutti were there and Carol works at the Kay and Kay Law Firm. Joanne Kay has been ill and is in south Florida. We are all pulling for her speedy recovery.
Lisa and Darrick Kobierowski were there as were Marilyn and Cliff Glenn. Al Beers, the retired county fire marshal, was there with his Peg and joined Diane Ranalli for one dance. It was a fun night and then whoever wished to do so returned to a home for breakfast.
Now the second thing that happens in this particular weekend is the “Love of Linda” spaghetti dinner and as usual it was a huge success.
More than 400 dinners served and people were there from 3:30 until 7 p.m. Margaret Clark takes charge and this year was no exception. Amy Mahon, the president of the group, was in the kitchen organizing a great bunch of students from the local high schools. There were also scouts helping as well as women from the Elks. That organization has always helped sponsor the dinner. They are a huge help. Dessert cutters were Eileen Meirer and Kathy Price.
The “Love of Linda” has been in existence for more than 20 years and provides financial help for those with cancer in Cape May County, and there are many. Ron and Renate Clancy came, and Renate informed me that her beloved sister Elisabeth had recently passed away. Our condolences go out to her and her family.
Linda Grassi left behind her husband Fred, son Andrew, and daughter Krista. Krista and her husband Mario Nocito will very soon become parents. They came to the dinner with grandparents Jack and Ellie Bickel and aunt Terry and uncle Dennis Hall. Vicki and John Lynch came with family members of the Weiser family, Randy, Kay, Kim, Brandon, Avianna and the newest member Layla.
Ron Becker Sr. and his wife Ellen have returned to our town for good. They had dinner with their son, police officer Ron and his family Gina, Angela, Brielle, and Cara.
This night is always a big turnout for the friends of Love of Linda, and we thank all those who attended and made donations to the cause.
The third thing that happens in the last weekend is there is no football. At least none that counts for anything.
