You are never disappointed at the Mr. Wildwood Catholic pageant, and this year was no exception. The contest was opened with co-hosts Sarah Visalli, Student Council executive board president, and Joseph Jett, sophomore class president, introducing the contestants. There were 10 this year, a few less than other years.
The boys did a dance routine to a Michael Jackson’s medley, which included “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Billy Jean” and “Thriller.” The routine included beaded gloves and Katie McCallion with Morgan Mulholland helping the contestants out.
The first category was casual wear. The gentlemen were escorted on the stage by a family member. Chris Kanya, who will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, was escorted by Donna Kanya, Weston Scott was with mom Rowena, Ian Flannery was with mom Shelia Flannery, Thomas Malinowski was escorted by sister Ryan – he will be going to Seton Hall University, Jake Martin was escorted by sister Erin, Keenan Osborne was with sister Kelsey, Trevor Cooper, who will attend the University of Delaware and is also the editor of the school newspaper, was with his mom, Cecilia. Sean O’Brien will attend Johnson and Wales, and was with his mother, Jeanette Burns; Antinino Piro will be going to Stockton College and brought his sister, Johanna; and James Baumgardner had his mom, Lynn, with him. He will attend Indiana University in the fall.
The swim wear is always the fun event and this year Thomas Malinowski became the “The Little Mermaid,” or the big mermaid as it turned out, and Jake Martin went Hawaiian, with the help of Katie Jett on the ukulele. Antinino Piro portrayed himself as an elder man on the beach with a metal detector.
For the talent portion, Chris Kanya went from a hockey player to a tennis player and to a basketball player by taking off layers of clothes.
Westin Scott sang and then played the drums. Ian Flannery and Joseph Jett did a take on computers, Blackberry and Apple devices and how far we’ve come with terms and their meanings. Thomas Malinowski played the guitar, and Sean O’Brien sang with Katie Jett on guitar. Trevor Cooper sang “It’s Times Like These,” and James Baumgardner and Antinino Piro did a skit about a really tall guy, (James is 6 feet 9 inches tall).
Besides becoming Mr. Wildwood Catholic, one can also be named Mr. Congeniality and that went to Chris Kanya. The People’s Choice award was given to Weston Scott.
The formal wear portion is always fun and exciting. The girls were in the latest prom wear.
All the colors in the rainbow were exhibited by the dresses the young ladies of Wildwood Catholic were wearing with their handsome escorts. Weston Scott was with Neve Marino, James Baumgardner had two dates, Taylor Bradshaw and Megan Metzler.
Sean O’Brien was with Clara Mathis, and Trevor Cooper was paired with Paige Stefanikiewicz. Antinino Piro was with Erin O’Brien, Ian Flannery was escorted by Taylor Burkhardt, Thomas Malinowski was paired with Danielle Muratore, Chris Kanya was with Maddie McGlad, who wore turquoise. Red was the color for Caitlin McLaughlin with her date Keenan Osborne, and Jake Martin was on stage with Kaitlin Zinkewich.
The evening concluded with questions to all the contestants.
Weston Scott was asked what he wanted to do when he grows up? Answer: to be a doctor in physics, and help change the world. Trevor Cooper was asked, “If you had a chance to meet someone in heaven who would it be and why?” Answer: Thomas Jefferson, because he was a guiding light and the country could use some help.
Antinino Piro was asked who has been the biggest influence in his life? Answer: “My mother because she taught me right from wrong and because she loves me.”
When it was all over and judges turned in their scores, the winner was Weston Scott, who will be attending the University of California in San Diego.
