The heat index was at 110 degrees, but Mary Rossi was cool, calm and collected as she celebrated her 90th birthday at the Wildwood Crest Fire Hall on Saturday, July 7. The party was given by her children: daughter Donna Troiano and her husband Ernie and son Ed Rossi Jr. and his wife Sherri, and six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren along with the hundred or so other family and friends that were there. Mary Rossi was one of six children born to the Vecere family and today there are three remaining siblings, including her brother Matt and sister Grace Anzelone.

At 90 Mary is the last surviving owner of the famous “Phil and Eddie’s Surf Club.” Mary was married to Ed Rossi for 62 years and they were in partnership with Phil and Sally Bonelli, thus the name “Phil and Eddie’s,’ which was long a mainstay in the Wildwoods for entertainment, food and drink.

At the party were many who worked and or frequented the “Surf Club,” which included Reds Morgan and Danny Di Giovanni, original bartenders at the club. Also there were brothers Lou and Tony Suppa, and another set of brothers Lou and Tony Flacco with their spouses. Joey Montello and Carol were there, and also the Martorano’s came for the festivities.

Good friends Snooks Bailie, Phyllis and Tony Catanoso, Mary Nestor, Ev Leahy and Bill and Dolores Morey were all there and some even got to escape work that night especially Jackie Mikulski from the “Key West Café.”

Rick and Connie Anzelone, Jeanette Lamb. Kathy and Joe Breuss, Janet and Jerry D’Antonio were there and so was Joe Cirrinicione with his wife Ann and sister-in-laws Jo Daning and Nettie McClain.

John and Josephine Corino were there speaking with Donna and Wildwood Crest Mayor Carl Groon.

Mary gets her hair done every week at the “Total Image Salon” and Mary Nastasi was there with her sister Margery Hughes and her son Nick Nastasi, the owner of the shop.

Carol and Tom Sawyer, George and Diane Morton, Bobbie and Ben Greenwood, Margaret and Pat Visalli, and Natalie Carfagno were in attendance and also since Mary is the mother-in-law of the mayor of Wildwood, both Commissioners Tony Leonetti and Pete Byron were in attendance with their wives. Also there were Ron Harwood, Bob Blanda and Bob Bonafino.

Roxy Donnelly and Richie Snyder were seated with Sue and Nino Cusella, and Jamie Petersen was speaking with Michele and Dave DeWeese.

Their were so many family members including Joan Troiano, he mayor’s mom, who posed with one of her great grandchildren, Addison. I was able to have everyone outside on the steps of the Crest Fire Hall for a group picture.

Mary loves to go out for lunch as well as dinner and I saw that she got a huge amount of cards that I’m sure were filled with gift cards to eateries throughout the county.
