Super Bowl Sunday has turned out to be a very busy time in the Wildwoods.

It is always preceded on Saturday night by the Wildwood Crest Fire Company’s annual Ladies Night and this year was no exception, but before that event my husband and I were also invited to a surprise party at the home of EJ and Tracey Dougherty. They were hosting a birthday party for Jennifer Konides who has just turned 50, and she was surprised.

The house was filled with family and friends, including her husband Nick, and daughters Nicole and Sophia. Also there were her father-in-law James Konides, her dad James Bratten, and sisters Jackie and Judy, who live in northern New Jersey. Several of Jennifer’s closest friends were there, including Doreen Fitzpatrick, Jodie Di Eduardo and Tracey Dougherty. Many couples were there from the dance school that her girls attend.

Everyone had a good time and we had to leave early to get to the Firemen’s dinner.

That Saturday night, the party was going strong by the time we reached the 5th floor of the Grand Hotel in Cape May. We missed the dinner, which we were told was delicious. Joe Cortese from the fire company brought in the group “Purple Rain,” which played for the entire night and many got up to dance. Fire Chief Dave Thompson was there with his Kathy, (who the next day fell and broke her leg, we wish her well). Also at that table were Gary and Sharon Stocker, Michele and Fred Mettler and Joan and Jack Maurer.   Marilyn and Cliff Glenn were there enjoying the night with Karen and Jack Holland. Colette and Lou Golato, Carol and Jim Saldutti, Mark and Tracey Thornton, and Tami Bradley with Tony Repholz, Bob Bethel was with a date and Ed and Mary Ellen Lopizzo were there.

Joe and JoAnne Cortese were seated with Bob and Jackie Blanda, and Chrissy and Ron Harwood. Also there were Commissioner Don Cabrera and his wife Jeannine, Diane and Jim Ranalli, and on the dance floor were Donna Koss and Bill Laffey.  The dance floor is always a place to find Kelly Mahon with sister-in-law Kathy Mahon, Kathy Popper, and Tracey Neri. But nobody danced as much or as hard as Fireman Gary Adeylotte, there with his wife, Pam.

It is always a fun night and I thank the WCFC No. 1 for inviting us and being there for the residents of Wildwood Crest.

The day of the Super Bowl is always the morning that a brunch is served by a former staff member of the Wildwood Leader. This year Debby Bass held the party at her home and it was a fun afternoon.

There were lots of memories of former publishers and editors of the “12th Street Rag,” referring to when the Leader offices and printing press were located at 1212 Atlantic Ave. in North Wildwood.

Everyone there brought something delicious for brunch. Those attending included Barb St Clair, Tracey Neri, Arlene MacDonald, Mary Jane Briant, Sue Adams, Suzanne Nardi, Lenore Kodytek, Jean Barraclough, and Jeannine Yecco.

Diane Wieland, Cape May County’s tourism director, was also a guest. Of the guests, I am the only one that remains at the Leader. It is always great getting together with these special and unique women.
