New attraction at Splash Zone

WILDWOOD- Splash Zone Water Park plans to open a $1.9 million Flow House to the park this summer, the largest single attraction expenditure in the park’s history.

The Flow House will be one of only five Flow House venues in the world, according to the organization. A second is located at Thundering Surf Water Park in Beach Haven. The attraction is scheduled to be open Memorial Day weekend.

Funds to help Cape Assist program

WILDWOOD – The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey has awarded a $25,000 grant to Cape Assist to fund a Wellness Initiative for Senior Education program.

The goal of the wellness education workshops, also known as WISE, is to extend good physical and mental health and to prevent or delay out-of-home placement for older adults.

Beach boxes are a leading cash cow

WILDWOOD- While the city’s new proposed beach amenities have spurred much discussion, so far the beach storage boxes are one of the most visible, and profitable, aspects of the beach revenue plan.

According to Commissioner Tony Leonetti, the boxes have created between $8,000 and $10,000 in new revenue for the city. He said of the 100 boxes that have been installed on the beach, about 20 are currently rented out.

Wildwood’s only theater for sale

Owner hopes to keeps the movies showing

WILDWOOD- The curtains may be closing on Wildwood’s last movie theater.

The Sea Theater on Pacific Avenue, which according to owners is the last operating movie theater on the island, has been placed on the market and is ceasing its film operations for the summer.

Mid-week holiday makes predictions difficult

There have already been crowds at the Wildwood boardwalk with high temperatures coming early this year. Some say a mid-week Fourth will dilute the business impact, while others see a boost to both weekends.

 July Fourth is one of the most highly-anticipated holidays for Cape May County. But when the Fourth falls on a Wednesday, like it does this year, determining how business will fare is challenging.

“It kind of gives us a double hit,” Diane Weiland, director of the county’s tourism department said. “Historically, it’s good for business.”

Weiland explained that some visitors will have already come down to the Cape the previous weekend, and might stay through the Fourth. Others, she said, will travel to the shore on the Fourth, and stay through the weekend of July 6 and 7.

According to Weiland, the county sees about 192,000 people a day on weekends. For holiday weekends, that number can shoot up to 700,000 a day, most likely because of “day trippers” to the Jersey Cape.

New bike shop is riding high

Scott Chambers, owner of Zippy’s Bike Exchange, said in the few months the business has been open, it has already evolved into a “full-blown bike shop.”

WILDWOOD- Zippy’s Bike Exchange is almost impossible to miss while driving down Pacific Avenue. On a street that’s spotted with markets and empty storefronts, Zippy’s collection of bright beach cruisers and mountain bikes fill the sidewalk in front of the shop.

“We’re doing better than I expected,” said Scott Chambers, owner of Zippy’s. “When we opened, we had no sales goals, we just wanted to work out the kinks before the season started.”

Kerrigan marks five years as RE/MAX broker
