Wildwood to try again on beach bars

WILDWOOD—The city is hoping that the third time might be the charm to bring some adult beverages to Wildwood’s expansive beach.

During the Board of Commissioner’s meeting Dec. 31, the governing body voted to again advertise for proposals to operate a bar on the beach.

They had previously done so in November, and before that had a contract with Point Break Management Group to bring the bars to Wildwood.

Commissioner Pete Byron said that only one proposal was received when the requests were advertised in November, but that proposal was 20 minutes late and couldn’t be accepted.

The proposals were due Dec. 27, and the commissioners say the date’s proximity to Christmas and New Year’s was most likely what caused the lack of proposals.

“We were thinking it was because of the time,” Byron said. “It’s very involved a lot of them may have been intimidated by the paperwork,” he added about the bid process.

In November, Ryan Troiano, who is overseeing the city’s beach activities, said that Wildwood is hoping to bring a beach bar that is similar to one found at a resort or beach club. He added that city officials will be paying close attention to a bar’s potential security plan. Aspects like how well-lit the establishment will be, as well as how they will provide security will be scrutinized.

To Byron, prospective beach bar operators should look a few towns north for his ideal beach bar.

“We want something similar to the style of beach bar that they have on Atlantic City’s beaches,” he said. “All you need to do is look 35 miles to the north of us and see their beach bars and how great they are.”

Beach bar proposals are due Jan. 29, Byron said.
