Fire Company No. 1 presents scholarships
WILDWOOD — The Wildwood Fire Company number 1 gave six $1,500 scholarships to local high school graduates after their first semester of college. The awards were presented to Katie Tirottta and Aidan Devlin from Wildwood Catholic High School, Kirby Thorton and Justin Fritz from Wildwood High School and Danielle D’Amico and Richard Zeigler from Cape May County Technical High School. The 18th annual scholarships are awarded in memory of Joseph R. Walto, a lieutenant in the fire company, who died while fighting a fire on the Ocean Pier on Christmas 1943.
‘Alumni and Friends’ association gives six scholarships
WILDWOOD — The Wildwood High School Alumni and Friends Association presented six scholarship awards to members of class of 2011. Mary McCausland and Karoll Candelabria are both attending Stockton College; Aaron Markley, Rowan University; Helmer Reyes, Cabrini College; Sarah Peterson, University of Memphis and Jeydi Serrano, Georgian Court. Kirby Thornton received both the Math and Language Awards presented in the name of Herman and Irene Gulick.
Andrew Alameno scholarship fund hosts bonfire
WILDWOOD CREST — The Andrew Alameno scholarship fund Bonfire will take place on March 3 at 5:30 p.m. on the beach at Pier 6600 in Diamond Beach. The evening will begin with a candle light vigil at 6 p.m. in memory of Alameno and the other victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Camping on beach costs more
WILDWOOD — The city did away with a flat fee of $35 to permit campers on its beach. City Commissioners unanimously approved a new ordinance Feb. 10 that requires a one-day event fee of $1,500 or a multiple-day event fee of $2,500. In addition to those fees, each tent will cost $10 and vehicles on the beach will cost $10.
North Wildwood Police respond to 2,419 calls
NORTH WILDWOOD — The city’s police department handled 2,419 calls during the month of January. Included in the calls were 12 motor vehicle accidents, 13 thefts, eight burglaries, one fraud case, four simple assaults and two drug offenses.
Other incidents were 30 disorderly persons offenses, six malicious property damage calls, 210 traffic enforcement issues, 63 medical incidents and13 animal complaints. Thirty-four people were arrested, including two for drunk driving. The police department checked on 1404 residents and businesses and assisted the fire department at one fire.
Wildwood Catholic presents February musical
NORTH WILDWOOD — Wildwood Catholic High School will perform “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” on Feb. 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. at the school, located at 1500 Central Ave. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Wildwood chamber hosts marketing seminars
WILDWOOD — The Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce will host David Yunghans, regional development director of Constant Contact, for two free seminars in March. The first seminar is March 5 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the second is March 12 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. All seminars will be held at the GWCOC conference center at 3306 Pacific Ave. in Wildwood. Chamber Members, non-members and members of the community are invited.
North Wildwood PD looking for seasonal employees
NORTH WILDWOOD — North Wildwood Police Chief Robert Matteucci announced that the police department is accepting applications for seasonal employees for 2012. The department has two openings for special law enforcement officers class I, 22 openings for special law enforcement officer class II and four seasonal dispatchers for this summer.
Those hired will be trained and will serve in a paid position for the 20-week season.
Applicants must be at least 18-years-old and have a valid driver’s license. Phase one of the process is application review. Those whose applications are selected will be interviewed. In phase two, candidates must pass a background check, as well as physical and psychological tests.
Those who are hired will take an eight-week course at the Cape May County Police Academy at Crest Haven. Upon graduating from the academy, the class I seasonal officers will take on mainly parking and traffic duties. The class II officers will take on full police responsibilities.
Fundraiser for Free Meal Center planned
NORTH WILDWOOD – A benefit fundraiser for The Free Meal Center will be held 3-7 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at Flip Flopz in North Wildwood.
Entertainment will include four bands, comedians and a magician.
A Chinese auction and 50-50 raffles will also be held. A cash bar is available.
Cost is $20, which includes a buffet. Flip Flopz is at 300 Olde New Jersey Avenue in North Wildwood.
The Free Meal Center is raising money to reach its goal of $50,000 by March 31. To date, $20,000 has been raised, officials say.
The money is needed in order for the organization to purchase the property as part of a down payment and to prevent the organization from being evicted from the Burleigh property where it plans to operate.

Gardening program set Feb. 22
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Joe Alvarez will present a gardening program Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Cape May Court House library.
“The Elements of Success in the Garden” program starts at 6 p.m. at 30 Mechanic St.
Whether it is a formal, cottage, vegetable or a wildlife garden, elements such as soil types, nutrients, water and even microbes all play an integral part in success of the garden, according to a news release.
Alvarez will teach the key to a successful garden. Seasonal tips with a monthly calendar will be presented, too.
He is a board member of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge and a certified Rutgers Master Gardner.

Consumerism topic of Feb. 17 talk
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – A county official will talk about contractors Friday, Feb. 17, at the Cape May Court House library.
John Rechner, director of the county Department of Consumer Affairs and Weights and Measures, will present “Consumerism Isn’t Just a Word, It’s What We Do.”
The program will take place at 2 p.m. at 30 W. Mechanic St.
Rechner will speak on home improvement contractors and what to look for when hiring a contractor and what to look for in the contents of contract. Also, Rechner will touch on Weights and Measures and what it means for the consumer.
