Heading into Labor Day weekend, high school  teams from the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District were hard at work getting ready for the fall sports season.

In Egg Harbor City, the Cedar Creek field hockey team, with new head coach Kim Briles, hosted a tri-scrimmage against intra-district rival Absegami and Hammonton on Friday, Sept. 1. Briles, a former assistant and head coach at Absegami, said she returned to head coaching to help encourage the growth of hockey both at Cedar Creek and the school district in general.

"I'm excited," she said. "It's still a young school ... and these girls are hungry. They definitely want to be like the other teams here (at Cedar Creek). They want to be competitive and have a banner here, like the girls basketball, football and softball teams, who are already powerhouses. They want to be recognized, too, for their efforts. So it's exciting to have a group that's hungry."

Over in Mays Landing, the Oakcrest boys soccer and field hockey teams hosted scrimmages against Winslow Township and Woodstown, respectively. The fall high school sports season opened Tuesday, Sept. 5.
