Michael Waszen wins 100th

Each week, the Current will select an athlete of the week based on competition involving high schools, youth or adult sports and recreation.

Waszen, a Galloway Township resident, became the fourth wrestler in Holy Spirit history to eclipse the 100-win plateau last month. Waszen won a 16-1 technical fall against Clayton’s Tommy Watson to join former state champions Mac Mancuso and Pat D’Arcy and teammate Tim Fitzpatrick in the school’s 100-win club. Waszen registered a pin at 182 pounds to help the Spartans win their third straight South Jersey Non-Public B wrestling championship last Friday against top seed Donovan Catholic. In Sunday's state title match against Pope John XXIII, he had a 7-3 decision against returning state qualifier Reece Mulduun but the Spartans fell, 48-21. Waszen has committed to wrestle at NCAA Division I Franklin & Marshall College next season. He won his first district title last season before reaching states with a third-place finish in Region 8.
