The Mainland Regional High School surf team awarded 18 varsity letters to its surfers for the first time in program history earlier this month.

Coach Richard Sless has been working since 2013 to get his surfers to the varsity level and he was finally able to hand out varsity letters to his surfers at the team's banquet Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Along with varsity letters, Sless awarded his students with all-academic honors. Pat Taylor, Vincent Giunta, Marley Miller, Dylan Hassett, Kyle Booth, Billy Rogers, Taylor Lee and Andrew Middlesworth were named to the All-Academic team for having weighted GPAs 4.0 or higher.

Taylor was recognized for having the highest GPA on the team and the junior was also named the Most Valuable Player after placing first in the National Scholastic Surfing Association Northeast High School Championships boys competition this fall.

As for the team's spring season, the Mustangs will visit California on their annual surf trip this June.
