ATLANTIC CITY — Ocean City High School’s Ryann Styer had a big performances in her final Hackney High School Girls Invitational Swim Meet on Saturday at Atlantic City High School.
Styer, a sprint freestyler, was the only swimmer at the annual event to win four races. She broke the meet record in the 50-meter freestyle for the third year in a row, this time in 25.86 seconds. Styer also won the 100 freestyle by 0.21 seconds and anchored the Red Raiders’ two winning freestyle relay teams.
“It feels so wierd to be here (at the Hackney Meet) for the last time, because I’ve been here eight years in a row, starting when I came to see my sister (Noel),” said Styer, a 17-year-old Longport resident.
“We have a lot of new swimmers and Maggie (Wallace, Ocean City’s other team-leading senior) want to get them going. I’m glad that my time in the 50 was better than last year. I was second in the 100 last year, so I’m really proud that I got first. We still have a lot of hard work to do. I’m excited to see how the season will end.”
Ocean City's Alex Antonov, Maggie Wallace, Claudia Scherbin and Styer won the 200 freestyle relay in a meet record 1:50.18. In the meet’s final race, Wallace, Andrea Teofanova, Antonov and Styer captured the 400 freestyle relay by more than 11 seconds.
"The 200 freestyle relay record was in 2014 just before I was on the team, and I thought we had a chance to break it," said Wallace, an 18-year-old Ocean City resident. "The four of us haven't raced together in the 200 free relay until today, and we were really fast."
Wallace's best high school event is the 500 freestyle. She was second to O.C. teammate Amanda Nunan by 0.09 seconds last year in the 500-yard freestyle in the state Meet of Champions.
"I decided to do other events today, but I'm looking forward to doing the (200 and 500 freestyle) later in the season," Wallace said. "It's a fun meet, so I figured I'd do the 200 free and the 100 back."
The meet honors the late Marion Hackney, who rode the high-diving horse at Steel Pier in Atlantic City. Meet announcer Frank Finnerty had a moment silence for the late JoAnn Hackney Wescoat, who helped to conduct the Hackney Meet for more than 20 years. Wescoat, the sister of Marion Hackney, died in June.
