MARMORA – Aaron Wittkamp Colwell American Legion Post 239 in Tuckahoe and Ocean City/Upper Township Rotary have joined hands in support of homeless veterans in Veterans Haven South in Winslow.

The state-operated residential treatment and transitional housing facility treat 81 homeless veterans, said assistant superintendent William Lobach. “Our objective is to eventually discharge them with sustainable income and permanent house,” he said. “Access to a bicycle would ease their ability getting a job and self-independence. The veterans walk five miles to their jobs.”

In addressing the needs of the homeless vets, the local American Legionnaires and Ocean City/Upper Township Rotarians launched “Operation Used Bicycles.”

Past Legion Commander Dennis DeSalvo and 2nd Vice President Randi Scheck of the Ocean City/ Upper Township Rotary respectfully request Upper Township residents, as well as residents in surrounding communities, to donate their used bicycles. Scheck said the bicycles would ease their burden, giving the veterans who served so admirably a sense of independence and easier access to work.

The used bicycles can be delivered to the Wayside Village Barbershop in Marmora on Tuckahoe Road, located directly behind Shoprite on Route 9.

Should the bikes need repair, the sponsoring organizations will assume the cost of the repair.
