UPPER TOWNSHIP – Sports teams, business groups, and civic organizations took part in a roadside cleanup in Upper Township over the weekend, part of the township’s Clean Communities program.

Groups were picking up loose trash along the road on Saturday, Oct. 15 and bagging it for collection later. Twenty-nine organizations took part in the cleanup, according to the Upper Township Green Team.

Upper Township Green Hornet wrestlers cleaned litter on Elmwood Avenue in Marmora.

“Our community cleanups are not only a great way for our wrestlers to give back, but they instill a sense of pride in our wrestlers for their community" wrestling coach Frank Sannino said in a release.

He said the Green Hornets have one more cleanup scheduled for Nov. 13 at the Chris Sack and Josh Fox memorials on West Sunrise Road in Petersburg. Both Sack and Fox were 2010 Ocean City High School graduates and wrestlers for the Upper Township wrestling team before they were killed a month apart in 2011 in separate motor vehicle accidents, according to the release.

The wrestling team is also accepting registration at the following times and locations: 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Upper Township Community Center; 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23 at Amanda’s Field; 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 during Trunk or Treat at Amanda’s Field; 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 during the football games. Fifth-grader Matt Innocente and his mother Jan pitched in with Fred Beuttler to pick up litter along Butter Road in Palermo. The Green Team cleaned roads in Marmora and Palermo for about two hours.

Members of the Upper Township Republican Organization also participated in the event. Committeeman Jeffrey Pierson, Joseph Loteck, Lauren Schmidt, Susan Adelizzi-Schmidt, and Freeholder E. Marie Hayes volunteered their time Oct. 15. They collected 13 bags of trash along Tuckahoe Road, according to a release.

Pierson said it is the 14th year the UTRO has taken part in the cleanup.
